Anniversary Fund of the City of Vienna for the Austrian Academy of Sciences

In 1997, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the city of Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Sciences set up a foundation for research projects from all disciplines which demonstrate a clear linkage to the city of Vienna. Scientists and scholars working at research institutions of the Austrian Academy of Sciences or at any research institution in Vienna can apply for financial support.

A new call is announced every year - in even years researchers from the humanities, social sciences and cultural studies are invited to apply, in odd years researchers from natural and life sciences, medicine and technical sciences are invited to apply: Project Grant.

In 2009, two prizes were established which are awarded to scientists and scholars working at the Austrian Academy of Sciences: The Best Paper Award is given to scientific staff members of the Section for Mathematics and the Natural Sciences, the Best Publication Award is given to scientific staff members of the Section for the Humanities and the Social Sciences.

A committee comprised of scientists and scholars nominated by the city of Vienna and the Austrian Academy of Sciences selects the projects to be funded and the prize winners. This committee is chaired by the mayor of the city of Vienna and the president of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

General Secretary of the foundation is OSR Prof. Dr. Hubert Christian Ehalt, Head of the Office for the Promotion of Science and Research (Municipal Department 7).
