FLARE [Future Leaders of Ageing Research in Europe]

FLARE [Future Leaders of Ageing Research in Europe]

FLARE 2 is a programme in Ageing Research jointly organised and financed by the participating organizations of several countries (Austria, Finland, France, Luxembourg, Romania, Sweden, Israel and Quebec) who are members of the European Research Area in Ageing 2 (ERA-AGE 2) Network funded under the ERA-NET scheme of the European Commission between 2009 and 2012 (www.shef.ac.uk/era-age).

The idea of the FLARE 2 programme is to promote future ageing research by supporting an interdisciplinary exchange for post-doctoral researchers in Europe.

The programme offers funding for a 3-year postdoctoral research post in ageing research. The 3-year grant comprises a main project part of 24-30 months carried out at a home institution hosting the project, with a mobility part of 6-12 months to a receiving institution in a different research field (preferably another discipline) in another country.

Submissions
Deadline for applications was October 15, 2010. The ERA-AGE consortium received a total of 25 applications from seven countries. Two applications were submitted by Austrian scientists.

Evaluation Process
FLARE applications were evaluated by at least two reviewers. Review panel discussion took place on April 6, 2011 in London. The panel comprised ten FLARE reviewers, eight FLARE funding representatives and one end-user representative.

Fellowships
15 FLARE post doctoral grants were awarded to successful applicants. Nine new FLARE 2 Fellowships have been awarded by funders in Austria, Finland, France, Israel, Luxembourg, Romania, and Sweden to projects across the disciplinary field. In addition, due to the number of high quality applications received, the Academy of Finland has funded another six FLARE applicants under an existing Finnish scheme.
