The Young Researcher Award in GIScience seeks to encourage young scientists in the fields of geoinformatics or geographic information science at an early stage of their careers by providing public recognition for outstanding achievements.
Up to three prizes are awarded each year to scientists aged 35 and under for publications that have advanced the development of the fields of geoinformatics or geographic information science.
In cases in which careers have experienced detours (e.g. interruptions to provide care etc.), the age restriction is raised to 40. Candidates do not have to hold Austrian citizenship.
The prize winners are decided by an awards committee set up by the Commission for GIScience of the OeAW.
