The Lindau Meetings cooperate with more than 200 of the most renowned science and research institutions worldwide to identify the most qualified participants. In the majority of cases, young scientists have to be nominated by these academic partners in order to be able to apply for participation.

Since 2013, the Austrian Academy of Sciences has been responsible for nominating the participants for Austria.

Each year, a selection committee is established, comprised of experts in the relevant research fields. The committee members are members of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. They review all applications and select a group of candidates to be forwarded to the organizing Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. This panel will then select those candidates who will be invited to participate.

The following criteria are relevant for the selection of the candidates:
Academic and research achievements, motivation and dedication, recommendations as well as extracurricular activities.
