DIMITROV-Information & Requirements

Objective

The fellowships are intended for the completion of a doctoral thesis in the fields of mathematics, natural and technical sciences at a university in Austria.

Target group

Young, highly qualified doctoral candidates in all fields of mathematics, natural and technical sciences are invited to apply,

  • who started their doctoral or PhD studies at a university in Austria no more than three years ago (deadline is the submission date),
  • are about to complete their doctoral thesis,
  • and have no other funding during the period applied for.

Exceptions to this rule can be made in the case of proof of care responsibilities, illness or disability; a maximum of three additional years can be credited.

In the case of a cumulative doctorate, the publication obligation (in accordance with the applicable doctoral degree regulations) must already have been fulfilled to the extent that the dissertation can be completed during the funding period.

Duration of the Fellowship

Fellowships are awarded for a period of three to six months and must be commenced within three months of notification of the grant. (Exceptions to this rule due to unforeseeable personal or family circumstances are possible, but require the submission of appropriate evidence.)

If the dissertation is submitted for review before the end of the funding period, the remaining time of the funding period can be used for the preparation of publications.

Amount of the Fellowship

The amount of the fellowship is 1,500 euros per month.

The fellowship is intended to help cover living expenses. Further costs, such as travel or printing allowances, cannot be applied for.

The fellowships are paid directly to the recipients. There is no provision for the fellowship to be paid out for a period prior to the actual start date.

Conditions

Applicants are free to apply to other (grant awarding) bodies. However, such applications and information on their outcome must be communicated in writing to the Department for Fellowships and Awards of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Other income (e.g. other scholarships, study grants, unemployment benefits, etc.) must be disclosed when submitting the application.

While receiving a Dimitrov Fellowship, employment of more than ten hours per week is not permitted and will result in immediate suspension of payment.

In the event of self-inflicted non-compliance with the fellowship conditions, the funding amount must be repaid.

Achievement of objectives

A copy of the completed dissertation must be submitted no later than three months after the end of the funding period.

All publications resulting from the funding must include the note "funded within the framework of a Dimitrov Fellowship of the OeAW" or "funded within the Dimitrov Fellowship Program of the OeAW".
