The Edmund and Rosa Hlawka Award for Mathematics is given for outstanding scientific achievements in the fields of number theory and geometry.

Target group

Scientists up to the age of 45 who have completed their doctorate at a university in Austria or who have been continuously engaged in scientific work in Austria (as evidenced by relevant publications during this period) for at least five years (the deadline is the submission date).

Submission procedure

Scientists who are professors in the field of mathematics at a university or non-university research institution in Austria are invited to nominate suitable candidates.

Self-nominations will not be accepted.

Selection process

The award is decided by the Division of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) based on the recommendation of an award committee following an international peer review process.

Nomination documents

  • Personal statement by the nominator regarding the following aspects:
    • Scientific career and international visibility of the nominee in the scientific community
    • Influence of the nominee on the development of research in the field
    • Presentation of the nominee's research achievements
  • Tabular curriculum vitae including a list of publications by the nominee
  • Selection of up to three of the most important publications documenting the award-worthy achievements (PDF format)
