Gustav Figdor Award for Law, Social Sciences and Economics


The Gustav Figdor Award for Law, Social Sciences and Economics recognises scholars under 40 who have produced outstanding scholarly works in the fields of jurisprudence and legal theory, the social sciences and economics.

Alternating call

In even years applications are accepted from the fields of the social sciences and economics.

In odd years applications are accepted from the fields of jurisprudence and legal theory.

Call 2019

Applications are invited from scholars from the fields of jurisprudence and legal theory who are no older than 40 years and submit their doctoral thesis and at least one additional publication finished no more than two years before the date of submission. Preference is given to candidates whose scholarly works have already been published or accepted for publication by a publishing house (peer review).

Selection Procedure


Prize winners are decided by an awards committee whose members are nominated by the Division of Humanities and the Social Sciences of the OeAW. Decisions are made on the basis of the panel’s own expertise and if necessary external reviews.

Application Documents


  • Tabular CV including list of publications
  • Letter of recommendation or expert review of the scholarly work(s) submitted
  • Abstract(s) of the scholarly work(s) submitted
  • one copy of each of the applicant’s publications submitted

The completed documents are to be uploaded via the online form and sent by post.

Fill in the online form and upload the documents as a total of 3 PDF files.

It is not necessary to supply signatures in the electronic versions. Protected files will not be accepted.

The individual files may not exceed 3 MB. The files are to be given the following names:

Publication2_Surname.pdf (i.e. additional publication)
