The Critical Infrastructure Award is intended to recognize young scientists in the fields of computer science, (business) informatics, communications engineering, electrical engineering and automation engineering, or similar, for outstanding achievements related to safety-critical infrastructures (e.g., transport modes, energy networks, telecommunications networks).

The purpose of the award is to promote outstanding achievements of young scientists in the context of their PhD studies and is therefore intended in particular for the completion of a dissertation.

In the annual call for proposals, the subject area is further narrowed to emphasize current research content.

Target Group

Young, highly qualified scientists in the dissertation stage who are Austrian citizens or who have lived in Austria for at least five years are invited to apply.

Topic 2023

"Digitization" is also omnipresent in the environment of safety-critical infrastructures. Infrastructure operators are working intensively to digitize existing business processes in order to make them more efficient.

But what other opportunities does "digitization" offer for creating new business models and value chains? Are there sustainable potentials beyond NFT & Co.?

We are looking for scientific papers that address one or more of the following topics using the example of safety-critical infrastructures (transport, energy, telecom, etc.):

  • development and evaluation of digital business models
  • new digital business models
  • new technologies that enable digital business models

Examples of relevant work:

  • new technologies for the implementation of Digital City Tolling
  • approaches to consumption-based energy price control
  • increasing the "resource efficiency" of transport modes
